Series 48 of the University of Florida Public Records Collection contains the administrative records of the deans of the College of Business Administration and its predecessor, the College of Commerce and Journalism. Only budget records, records related to the Southern Economics Association, and a few other items have survived for the college's first years. From 1931 on, the records are more extensive. A considerable portion of the series is taken up with the College's participation in professional organizations, including the Southern Economics Association, the Southeastern Economic Council, the Florida State Chamber of Commerce, and the Bureau of Economic and Business Research.The records reflect the college's interest in the business and social development of Florida and the South. The series includes the files of Walter Jeffries Matherly, Donald John Hart, and Robert F. Lanzilotti. The last four years of Dean Hart's files, 1966-1969, are misssing.

Walter Jeffries Matherly was born May 3, 1888 in Mackville, Kentucky. He received a B.A. from William Jewell College in Missouri and an M.A. from Washington University in 1916. He taught at the University of North Carolina before coming to the University of Florida in 1926 to organize its business school.
